Mommy Tribe

I never quite agreed with the whole It Takes a Village philosophy with raising children; but I wholeheartedly believe in the tribe. The bonds we form throughout different stages of our lives are so special and they don’t usually form overnight.. until now. Motherhood has been such a magic potion for practically instantaneous, incredible friendships. It truly is a sisterhood.

Nothing can prepare you for those first few months: healing from a major medical event, sleep deprivation, hormones, night sweats, frustration, worry, self-doubt, and sheer joy. Luckily, the long list before the silver lining was bearable and worth it, Iya is worth it. My local mom friends are absolutely amazing and so supportive but their babies were walking talking toddlers. I’d lay awake at night feeling like I was the only one never sleeping and spend my days talking to one little human who couldn’t respond yet, not even with a smile. The feeling of isolation was defeating (but that eventual first smile for mommy was EVERYTHING :) ).

I’ve known Saira & Zaineb via Instagram for some time but not on a personal level. Their babies are a few months older than Iya so I found myself connecting with each of them individually for advice (& just some company!), while they were doing the same with each other. We had quite the mom love-triangle goin’ on.. until one of us started a group chat and the rest is history! <3

These girls helped me through so many new trials, e-wiped my tears, sent me in fits of belly laughs, and always encouraged me to be the very best ME! We’d turn to each other on our low days and share the joys of even the tiniest of milestones. A great support system and a little bit of self-care is so so important. A good mommy needs to be a well cared for mommy! Back in September we stayed up late one night sending each other TBTs reminiscing over our pre-mom days (& bodies LOL) and began planning a girls-trip to just get away and get a break. We very quickly realized that it wasn’t our babies or our responsibilities that we needed a break from, but rather the monotony of daily life.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba

Hailing from LA, New York, & Toronto – we decided Mexico was the perfect destination since we could all fly direct with similar flight times! I wanted to stay somewhere that was obviously family friendly but with a boutiquey feel. With three babies in tow the last thing I wanted was a big box hotel with packed pools and kids running around everywhere. We needed an easygoing atmosphere for our easygoing itinerary of doing nothing (& loving it!)

In comes the cream of the crop, Banyan Tree Mayakoba. From my porter at the airport to my driver on the way to the hotel, everyone was so impressed with our plans for the week! Banyan Tree Mayakoba was not only so generous in hosting the six of us, they gave us some pretty incredible digs! We stayed in a three bedroom family residence complete with three bedrooms (duh!), our very own private rooftop pool, a courtyard, & full kitchen! I loved that the bedrooms were on their own floor so the babies could sleep without us disturbing them – hello three different nap schedules!

From the moment my driver pulled into the exclusive Mayakoba complex, I was blown away by the stunning grounds; and even more-so when we arrived at the hotel. With a fusion of Asian and Mexican design woven into a lush mangrove forest, I felt like we were worlds away. You have to take the boat ride on the river amongst the mangroves even if you’re not going anywhere. Go for a spin, it’s absolutely stunning!

The favorite part of our day was always breakfast! First thing in the morning, our babies were on the same schedule and ready to go lol! The buffet spread was amazing with a few made to order stations where I stuffed myself on delicious french toast and burritos daily – what a combo! The property was so quiet and peaceful, we loved taking a walk with our strollers each morning after breakfast. Every other meal was a toss up with our three babies on different schedules in different timezones so we actually only made it out to dinner once! I have to say dinner was my highlight of our trip and the girls won’t stop making fun of me for it lol! We ate at their Thai restaurant, Saffron. The ambiance was so pretty and romantic + the food and service were incredible! It just felt great to have a “girls night out” even with our sleepy, fussy babies! I haven’t had a GNO in so long!

Our trip was so beautiful & special, we’ll cherish the memories with our babies forever! Thank you Banyan Tree Mayakoba for your generosity, hospitality, & the much needed departure from everyday life. We cannot wait to visit again!

Join us for the Next Getaway!

We’ve gotten such a tremendous response to our trip and the sentiments behind it that all I wanna do is share the experience with you too! I’m looking to organize a trip like this later this year that you and your babies can join us on! I’ve gotten to know so many of you mamas this year via social media and I think it’s time that we all bond!

Irene, you’re like my virtual older sister. I’ve watched and read your posts from the beginning of time. Heck I remember Waseems Olivia Pope song! You’ve always talked about your life prior to being married and the struggles you’ve had with your own relationship with your mum. Something I resonate with on a million levels. To see you with your own kolijar tukda basking in motherhood and absolutely glowing from the happiness of being a mother melts my entire soul. I know that Iya will love every single bone in her entire body, she will love herself entirely, she will know the depths of self love because of you Irene. I’m not quite there yet with being a mum myself yet but I’m excited to watch your journey!

P.S YOUR PHOTOS ARE NEVER SHORT OF PHENOMENAL

Hello beautiful Irene! I follow you on IG and I must say I like keeping up with you. Though sometimes I can’t always be online since I am a busy mom of 2 lol & I’m a missionary for my church so I’m always occupied with something. But just some ideas (suggestions) I use to live in Australia (Melbourne/Sydney) and personally I fell in LOVE with that country. I’m pretty sure if you ever visit for a getaway you’ll love it too! IK travelling with babies isn’t as easy as portrayed in movies buuut it’s so worth it! Travelling with your family, making memories (sighs) lol. To begin Qantas’s airline employees are so friendly even when travelling with baby. Food in Aussieland is so much healthier and more natural. Australia is filled with adventures as kangaroo parks (depends what area you’re in.) hiking trails, beaches (my fave: Bondi beach) opera house, harbour bridge, Sydney tower exotic buffet, coral reef beach (Queensland), movie world (Brisbane) for kids. The nightlife in Melbourne’s CBD. It’s just the whole experience that counts. If you ever get an opportunity I suggest visiting Australia.

Australia is heaaavyyyy on my bucketlist but I think too far for this trip in particular wahhh! I wish!

Thank you so much for all of the recommendations, I really appreciate it and will definitely put them to use when I eventually make my way down under!

Thank you also for your kind words, give your kiddos a squeeze from me! xo

I totally believe in the Mom tribe and have a few of my own I would be so lost without. So I am so glad you found some stunning souls inside and out to take this trip with!

I’d love to go away somewhere warm as well. Feel like the packing is much easier for self and baby when it’s a warmer climate and you can enjoy a bit more without worrying about them getting sick

I seriously don’t care to do anything in particular but just chill and have awesome Company, play games, spa/jammie night!

I’d also love to help you plan any of this you need help with. Brands/logistics whatever you need Mama let me know! I’m wodking on a WOC/minority centric (for lack of better word I suppose) mommy convention idea now and this sounds like the ultimate retreat. And it’s like you said it’s not the babies we wanna be away from we don’t mind doing the same things for them long as it’s a change of pace for us. :) muah you’re doing amazing Mama!

I want a baby just so I can join you on this trip. WOW! Irene I have been following you since the very beginning and I am so super proud of you!!!! I love how you guys have shown other mom’s that they can STILL be themselves and have fun even with a baby! GO YOU!

I been following you and your husband for a while now. My husband makes funny of me for talking so much about you all. Waseems style and funny post to your make up, skincare and of course mommy posts. I just feel so connected with you without even knowing you.

I’m a mommy of two beautiful crazy little monster. Daughter 9 months and Son 2 yrs old. I also had a roller coaster of feelings and questions. I found comfort in talking to other new MOMS and slowly realized I always had it in be just needed support and love. After seeing your trip, I try to get plan one but no one was really ready for it, traveling with kids, financially, or just didn’t have the time. I just want to let new moms, relax and have fun with the kids, enjoy some mommy and baby time.

Irene, I have loved this post!! I have been following you for a while now, on youtube and instagram. I haven’t watched any of your videos recently as a mom of an 8 month old, I have very limited time.
Like you I believe, it takes a tribe to raise kids!! I have loved your recommendations and have used some in our lives.

Definetly a warmer place, it be easier on the kiddos. Would love some girl time. I can help out with organizing.

    Love to Iya! Xo

These posts and your IG post help me SO much. As a first time mom with a little whose a few months younger than Iya it is SO refreshing to hear someone talk about motherhood in this way. (Not that you don’t mention the struggles, you just dwel on the negative).

I’d love to do the mommy and me weekend. This same resort sounds awesome and it’s not too far from Detroit.

Having a mommy tribe is so so important. My son, Ayaaz was born last year October. Although I had my mom with me the first week and husband for three weeks post delivery. The reality set in when I had to be on my own. My husband travels for work M – Th, those days/nights were so hard, I was all alone with this tiny human who slept all day and cried all night. Between taking care of him and trying to heal from a C-section, I had so many breakdowns. Those were the nights I felt so isolated, even though I have a few mommy friends, it’s not always easy to reach out the first few weeks when you’re trying to figure out so many new things. But he is worth everything. I live for his morning smiles and cuddles. I go back to work on Feb 5th, so my time with bubs now will only be in the evenings and weekends. A getaway with him and so many other wonderful mommies would mean a great deal. I don’t have any specific destination in mind but somewhere warm (Caribbean), as far as activities I think with the little ones it’s easier to just stay in resort to relax, spend quality time, connect with other moms rather than going out on excursions. Hoping I can make it to this trip! I want to end with saying that you are an inspiration to many, Irene, thank you for being one of mine. Blessings upon blessings for your beautiful family. Love to Iya!

Such a beautiful and much needed trip. You said it best, Mamas just need a change not time away from being with baby. Mommy tribe is so important and I’m so glad I have you gf! May Allah always protect you and Iya and grant you health and strength always to be able to raise your beautiful princess. 😘

  10. February 1, 2018 / 6:35 am

I completely agree with you on the whole it takes a village thing. I still have family n in India and looking at how my cousins, they had it easier than I did over here. Thank God for my mom, but she too had tonreturn to work one day. Just came down to me and my son. Which is draining but so rewarding, like you mentioned, it all makes worth. I wish I had a mom tribe…me and my four other very good friends all had baby just a few weeks apart. We got 5 boys within the circle. How I wish we were closer and could even do half of what you guys did.

I would love to go on this mommy trip. I’d wanna not go far keep the flight time under 4 to 6 hours. Other than that I wouldn’t care what would do an long as it’s laid back and we all just have fun!

    • February 1, 2018 / 10:08 am

    Hi Irene!

I have been following you on IG for awhile now and I have always loved your makeup posts. I was so excited for you and Waseem when you announced you were expecting! Children are such blessings! Congratulations on Iya! She is absolutely beautiful! I miss when my daughter was her age, as she is now 7. I have recently gave birth to my second child and I totally know the feeling of needing an escape, not from our babies, but from the monotony of life. It’s always nice to have people who are in the same boat as you and you both can have each other as support systems. When I saw your IG posts about your Mommy and Baby trip I thought that was such a great idea!! I would say for your next trip definitely somewhere warm and sunny again! I would love to just meet and be around other mamas who also have young children. Just enjoying each others company, growing friendships and our babies could make friends too! I’m sure wherever you plan on next will be just as amazing!! (My IG page is private, but it’s @legendarie) God Bless!

Asalaamu Alaikum Irene! Can I just say, I was one of the Moms who went crazy when I found out you awesome three Mommas were going on holiday together lol i messaged Zeebee saying next time take me!! Lol (so I reaaaaalllly want to join you guys!) now if ALLAH SWT has other plans for me then Alhamdulillah but I wish and I will pray that I can join you all!
I remember when you announced your pregnancy from Madina, I messaged you on YouTube like soooo happy that you found out there! For me that was like confirmed that you and Waseem are ALLAH SWT’s special people (I already loved you from YouTube) Masha’ALLAH.
Zeebee was there for me when I was feeling anxious after hearing delivery stories and she was just too sweet, she really calmed me down and it’s exactly what I needed!
Saira, was also pregnant same time as me and she’s like my homie lol I was constantly harassing her with questions and worries! She was awesome! So for me, to meet you all and just say thank you in person is all I need. I was alone without family and to have these amazing women just tell you it will all be alright- well Alhamdulillah.

I’m in Canada, so somewhere on this side of the earth sounds good and somewhat easier to do with an infant!
What I’d like to do? Well I haven’t been on holiday since baby so I would like to just chill, have chats and dinners with you all and maybe do some fun activities with the kiddos.. I would actually love to attend some kind of seminar or something where I can learn how to raise this kid loll (but I guess I can just ask all the mamas that attend hehe)
Price is a bit of a worry for me, but I know you will find something reasonable for us but still luxurious at the same time!

I just hope I can be a part of this trip with you all! Insha’ALLAH.

First and foremost i’d like to say, you are so awesome and brave for traveling with Iya alone (I realize this wasn’t the first time) but you have inspired me to want to as well which is why I would love to come on a girls trip with you ladies! A beach vacation always sounds amazing to me and with babies on different schedules, the idea of a low key vacation where you can sit things out if the baby is acting up or tired is a great idea! I would be up for anything that isn’t a super long flight for me since my baby boy (currently 9 months old) has only ever been on one flight and i’d be a little nervous going with him alone somewhere super far away. I think budget wise under 2k would be great!

I have been incredibly lucky to have some of my closest and oldest friends go through this same phase of life around the same time (+/- a few months) and we have a mom chat group that literally keeps us sane at odd hours of the night when no one else could understand the sentiment or help the freak out of some odd situation with the baby that we haven’t experienced yet or just the normal freak outs all the time lol! It is so helpful and I am so blessed to have that support in my life. I am so happy that you have also found that in your new friends!

My IG is private but please add me!! Afia_r is my IG name.

ps. Iya is sooo beautiful mA mA !!

  15. February 1, 2018 / 9:17 am

    Hi Irene!

This mommy trip is such a great idea! Totally agree that it is not an escape from our babies, but an escape from the monotony of life that can help refresh and revitalize!

Would love to join a group trip with my (currently) 10 month old daughter. I’m sure everyone’s schedule/routine on this trip would be different, so an easy going trip would be ideal. A place to chill, eat yummy food, make some friends, take some cool pics ;) and make memories with our babies sounds so dreamy (i.e., I would suggest something within the US so its feasible and economical for everyone – maybe southern california, lake tahoe, montana, utah…)

One thing I will point out is that female friendships are so hard because we can be very judgmental and hard on each other. I would love to be in an environment where we are sincerely nice to each other! I run a Dallas based community organization called “Hi Chic Mama” (@hichicmama on Instagram). It is all about meaningful female friendships in motherhood. It is a social community of support, because we all know getting to and through motherhood is not always easy! Would love to help organize some activities to help moms get to know each other/bond/break down those walls. :)

Thanks for organizing this, one of the million things to add to your list of things to do I’m sure ;)

Ahhhh your pictures are everything and love how you have been keeping it so real about all your experiences as a new mom! As a new mom I can relate to what you said about feeling isolated and overwhelmed. My baby girl is 2 months old and was born premature after an extremely difficult pregnancy. I was all about the glam, traveling, GNO and my career before getting pregnant but because I was so so ill and hospitalized so often during the pregnancy and now struggling as a new mom – I feel like a shell of my former self. :( It has been SO hard. I would love to have something to look forward to – a trip somewhere warm with direct flights… maybe Caribbean? Somewhere else in Mexico? I wouldn’t even mind doing a spa/resort somewhere in the west like Arizona etc. (that are baby friendly?! Does this even exist lmao) It would be amazing to bond with other moms, share mommy tips and experiences. And also have the opp to glam again. 1k not including flights for a budget if it’s a long weekend thing?

Would love to meet you all! Saira helped me a lot with booking ABCI for my wedding years ago .. I still remember how comfy I felt when I spoke to her on the phone. Felt like I was speaking to a friend. And I have been a longtime follower of yours and a newer follower of zainebs. Love everyone’s blogs and IG and snaps. You are all so inspirational mA mA mA. My name is Stephanie and I have been following you for a while now. I think back when you were doing videos in your room and still doing photography lol . You seriously inspire me everyday and it’s awesome to see the mommy you’ve become. I have 3 children two boys who are going to be 9 and 6 and then my daughter who is 11 months next month will be her first birthday!! I never had sisters growing up so having her was everything. I would love to just go somewhere warm because I live in Chicago right now and to spend time away from life lol. I’m currently in nursing school and working when I’m not so a getaway would be amazing . My instagram is S_hernandez2 hopefully we can meet one day with our babes :)

Ireneee, I want to primarily say that you are gorgeous and your pictures are simply stunning. I recently started following you (it’s been about a year) and I don’t know what took me so long, but I appreciate all of your posts. I think I connected with you instantly once you began sharing your motherhood experience. So many of your posts resonated with me as I myself was journeying first time pregnancy and motherhood. Your mom tribe post really had me engaged and while reading through it I felt as if I were there with the three of you as well.

I’m so happy that you have found beautiful friends who you can confide in and I hope that I too can make mommy friends. Like you, a lot of my girlfriends also have children but they are either much older than my 5 month old or are already on their second or third child, so at times I feel I don’t have anyone I can turn to. I am so down for this mommy trip though! I would love to meet you and all the other mommies and get to connect and just relax and have fun with our little ones. I live in Chicago so anywhere warm and Zika free is good with me!

Hi Irene, I was awaiting this holiday post for oh so long. All three of you literally opened up endless doors of possibilities for Mommy’s like me who are hesitant to travel with their little bubbas. Your posts made it seem like the entire trip was so smooth and I love the fact that although you were away from home, on a trip with friends you had met through social media, there was no obligation to break away from your routine with little bubbas, as they would understand your situation –
something I have found so difficult to do.

As a new mommy to a 2month angel, like every mom I have had to make sacrifices and the biggest was my travels! It’s hard to go on holiday with friends or family now because most of them say “it’s just a case of two, three, five days, just leave her at home she will be fine” but they don’t understand it’s not that simple, I can barely be away from her for more than a couple of hours I cannot imagine a few days :|

So this comment is from a mom desperate to get some sun and also bring her most important belonging along!

I think the Bahamas would be a good idea, they have lovely resorts which would cater to toddlers and babies where you can do activities without the need of traveling out – again because of everyone being on different routines it just makes it easier to be in one area where everything is child friendly so you don’t have to go to different places.

Irene I’ve watched so many of your videos and seen so many of your post’s on insta, you’re an amazing person. Im a makeup artist now it’s very slow and sometimes I just wanna give up but I have 3 kids and I know we always do our best for them so I pray one day I can be as famous and as inspirational as you are. Being a mum is such a special thing, they grow up so fast. I miss mine being babies. Iya is absolutely beautiful. We all as parents make sacrifices for our children give up on a lot of things esp sleep but it’s nice that you can take her away and she’s so good for you. No one can say motherhood is easy but it truly is a blessing xxxx

Salaam Irene.. MashAllah.. I love all of the pictures. I also love that you are spending quality time with other mom’s and their babies. I think that every mother needs that support and friendship from other moms, even if you are a 1st time mom or on your 4th kid.. lol.. MashAllah I have 3 boys now, ages 5, 3 and 7 months, and each pregnancy, birth and child have been completely different. Having support from other mom’s, even just venting helps. Irene please keep up these wonder blogs and I always look forward in seeing your pictures. Please give the baby hugs and kisses from me. 💗💗💗 love.. Safina (mahmoodbrothers)

This post is everything and so much more! It hits right at home ❤️ When I had my baby girl 3.5 months ago, the feeling of isolation/fear was so difficult to handle and I felt that nobody understood what I was going through…but me! As the weeks went by and she kept getting a little bit older, it definitely got easier…but keeping in touch with my mommy friends has made this whole entire experience so much simpler and it’s so important to have that support system! I absolutely love your “the sisterhood of motherhood” mommy tribe statement. I’ve read so many mommy blogs and posts and this one got me all kinds of feels!! I would loveeeee this virtual world of mommy sisterhood to turn into exactly what you have suggested, a mommy+me trip! Somewhere warm+close by (Caribbean? Maybe Bermuda since it’s zika free? In case that’s a concern for any of the mamas! Oh and I say warm because I’m from Chicago lolll) would be perfect, and give everyone an amazing opportunity to bond with each other.

Love all of your posts, Irene! Looking forward to reading more and more! ❤️ Lots and lots of love to your little Iya!

    Hi Irene!

My name is Zeina. I’ve been following you since you got married. We have a mutual friend, who is very dear to me; Tina Saad. I had mentioned to her that I was starting a clothing line at that time and she mentioned that you blogged and had your own business so I began to follow you! I am very impressed by you and I’m so glad that you are enjoying mommy-hood! It’s hard to find a tribe of bad -ass moms who are determined to balance mom, wife, and boss time. After a few (life) hiccups, I’m getting back into business and I’m starting a positive lifestyle blog this month!

To answer your questions, I would LOVE to go somewhere similar to the place in Mexico. Somewhere relaxing with a boutique feel. I would love to collaborate with other mom-preneurs and discuss ways we can form a community where we can empower & inspire one another, in business and home life. I don’t think you can put a realistic price on that. That would be priceless.

Hi Irene! I’ve followed you for quite some time and me and my sister LOVE you! Love how you’ve made motherhood look like an adventure over a compromise. I signed up for the mommy trip info, I’m currently due with my first in May so who knows if I’ll have it in me but I’d love to try! Would love the opportunity to make friends with moms who I feel are so similar to my background! All of my friends either haven’t started having families yet or don’t have the time to set aside in their busy lives. Beach vacations are always good for us east coasters #Jersey who don’t get enough of the warmth, anything under 6 hours flight. Budget is 2k :) Keep up the amazingness!

I’m private on IG but please add me :) @effikenakhrey

    Hi Irene,
This post has got to be my favorite from your blog, yet and that’s saying a lot! I would love to go on a trip, my son is 2 months, so someplace relaxing and all inclusive is a plus! I have been thinking of Sedona, AZ or Montreal and catch the sites to name a few. This is such a great idea and your always an inspiration for me. When I’m utterly exhausted from sleep deprivation I check our your blog and wonder, where does Irene get the energy :)

Yes!! It’s not outside the US, but I’ve heard Arizona has some great spa weekend getaways. Now the question is: do I bring both kids or pick the easier one from that week? ;)

    Irene,
I have finally read through this post and first off I think it’s amazing that you were able to travel with friends whom you met over social media that you were able to share experiences with and feel like they helped you through a tough time. For me, I was one of the first of my friends to have a baby so it was tough not having anybody to share my moments with (and when my daughter was first born there were a lot of moments where I needed that comfort!!). My daughter is now 18 months old and I am expecting another! It would be awesome to travel with mamas who love being mamas but need that time to enjoy and experience time away with others who feel the same.

PS, how was it traveling without your hubby?! I always have such a problem with feeling anxious without that extra body helping me lug everything around. Kudos to you mama!! (my husband also says he thinks he knows you from high school!! small world :-) )
