Slow down Iya!! Solids already?! *cries*
I can’t believe my tiny little baby is eating food already & boy does she love to eat! Just like her mommy đ
Iya’s pediatrician gave her the green light to start solids during her 4 month appointment since she was able to sit supported with good head control. I personally didn’t want to start until 6 months because of AAP guidelines so I asked if it would be alright to wait until after her 6 month appointment (she said no problem!) Iya didn’t seem interested in food anyways. She never watched us eat or eyed our food – so I figured why force it when food is just for fun at this age anyways. A few weeks later I woke up one morning and just had a gut feeling that she was ready for food. All my mom friends told me that would happen, I would just know when Iya is ready. Nobody knows a baby like their mommy! I spent the day researching baby cereals, talking to mom friends, and we were off to Target to buy her first food – oatmeal!
I decided on Happy Baby Probiotic Baby Cereal, but please talk to your pediatrician because every baby is different. I hand expressed some milk (OUCH! I pumped every time since then lol) and mixed her up some oatmeal! SHE. LOVED. IT!! Man, the level of satisfaction when your kid eats lol!
I’m a work-from-home mom so as of now, I really want to make her baby food myself. I say as of now because my sentiments or situation may change, who knows? Five months in, I’m happy to say I still love exclusively breastfeeding and now that I’m beginning to ween, I enjoy making her food myself. Both may change and that is perfectly okay! Don’t let mommy blogs or forums make you feel inadequate about things like formula or pre-packaged food… fed is best and every situation is different. Mom’s well-being is just as important as baby’s. I work from home and have a singleton, who knows what my situation will allow next week or with baby #2. That was my roundabout way of saying every mom needs to be and feel supported. I know how much pressure this all is, I support you. <3
I’ve tried a few first foods with her and so far she loves apples & sweet potato; she even loves them mixed together! She didn’t love avocado or banana but I think its a texture thing since those are mashed raw not purĂŠed, I’ll try introducing them again soon. After she successfully ate her oatmeal, I made a huge Amazon order to get all the new things she’ll need as well as supplies for me to make and store baby food. Let’s get to it!
Highchair
I’m still shopping around for a highchair that will help Iya socialize, is functional, comfortable, but still stylish. A few that I have my eye on are the Bloom Fresco, Mima Moon, Nuna Zaaz, & the Cybex Marcel Wanders High Chair. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated đ leave a comment below mamas! I needed something right away because I was feeding her in her Bjorn bouncer and just didn’t feel comfortable making that a habit. I want Iya to learn to eat at the table and know that food is always eaten sitting up and from a spoon!
I’ve been wanting to buy a Bumbo Floor Seat for Iya anyways as she’s learning to sit so I opted for their upgraded Multi Seat instead which serves as a floor seat, booster, & feeding seat with a tray! I bought some suction toys to keep her entertained and I seriously just love this seat! I do still feel like I’ll need a proper hair chair when she starts eating more often because I’d like something higher but I love that this seat can work as a booster up until age 3. Honestly, I plan to take it with us to restaurants instead of using their germy highchairs and its coming with us to grandma’s for Thanksgiving this week too!
Food Prep
I just bought the Nutri Ninja Auto-IQ Blender recently as I’m trying to get my diet right and it’s been fantastic for making Iya’s purĂŠes! For both her applesauce and sweet potato mash all I did was peel and boil them before throwing them in the large blender cup. So easy!
I also purchased a simple steamer basket for veggies (which I haven’t gotten to yet!) and a NUK Mash and Serve Bowl which I used for avocados and bananas. She didn’t nom up either of those like her purĂŠes so I just use it as an serving bowl for now.
Freezing & Storage
Initially I bought these silicone freezer storage cubes because the sections are a perfect 2oz each – great for one-ingredient purĂŠes! I just pop out a cube, thaw/warm it up and Iya’s ready to eat! Now that I’ve started mixing flavors I also like having 1oz cubes on deck so I purchased these Mumi & Bubi Freezer Trays too! They hold a lot more than they look like they can, one tray held purĂŠe from three large sweet potatoes! My friend gave me a great tip to pop out all of the cubes once frozen and keep them in a ziplock bag in the freezer.
Let’s Eat!
I haven’t bought any bowls yet! Most of the time I pop a frozen cube of purĂŠe into one of my pump bottles, heat it up in my Avent bottle warmer, & feed her with a spoon directly from the bottle. Sometimes I even pump a little milk directly into the bottle to thin her mash a little if needed. I use Munchkin White Hot Safety Spoons – they’re super cute, indicate if the food is too hot, and I like that they aren’t very deep. I can’t imagine Iya’s little mouth can handle a big scoop of food just yet! I got her some great silicone bibs that easily wipe clean and can even be thrown in the dish washer!
I just ordered some OXO Tot Glass Baby Blocks, a lot of moms love them for freezing food but I bought them to use as bowls! I like that they’re small enough to fit in my bottle warmer since I’m trying my best to not microwave her food.
Lastly, I picked up some Munchkin Mesh Feeders — I’m always hearing moms rave about these but I can’t get the dang things open lol! Maybe I didn’t try hard enough because I’m not dying to use them yet, I just wanted to have them on deck (Amazon is addicting). Iya’s just started chewing on her fingers so once she’s full blown teething I think these will be great for frozen fruit.
Ur mommy blogs amazing especially the weaning one as im going to start weaning my son soon just waiting for him to turn 6months. He has cow milk allergy so im abit worried to start him any earlier as we had issues with him for the first 3months of him bring born. Alhamdullilah hes on prescribed formula n i stopped breastfeeding after him turning 3months..I agree when ur baby eats n is content it brings you happiness.its great to read ur experience and as first time mothers it helps đ keep up the great work.xx
Irene, I just want to say thank you for such thorough “mom” post. I’m expecting my first child in March 2018 and feel so overwhelmed by everything. I have been watching your Youtube videos for several years, so I trust your input, and your blog posts have helped guide me through pregnancy. I appreciate and love your efforts Irene, please don’t quit anytime soon! Love from Houston!
I was so excited to start solid foods! I invested in all this gear (at that time) only to find my oldest had noooo interest in eating for the entire first year of his life! I was starting to panic and but through trial and error realized he didn’t love the texture of smooth food (he’s 4 now and only just started eating yogurt). By this point, I had been exclusively breastfeeding for almost 13 months and I was newly pregnant with my second. My second child though, lovesss food and is so adventurous in trying new things! BUT I had wait almost 2 years before my high chairs, blenders etc got regular use lol!
Hi Irene,
I adore your blog and love it even more now that youâre a mama bear. Amen to fed is best, we pressure ourselves way to much. I absolutely adore the stokke trip trap high chair. Around 6-10 months we had our little one in a summer infant support me 3 in 1 which comes with a tray. We had it placed on our dining table chair, so the little one ate with us. I am currently a SAHM and enjoyed having breakfast lunch and dinner with the little one. Now that heâs 10 months old he adores the stokke trip trap and loves sitting with us at the table. He eats at the table and I place ezpz mini mat (it has suctions on the bottom) and he eats directly off the table. We choose to
feed him lots if finger foods to encourage self feeding. Also forgot to add the stokke
high chair is ergonomically friendly for the baby as well and it grows with the child. I know itâs a bit pricey but honestly itâs worth it.
Lots of love
hiďźmy love, would you please check my [email protected]
My baby girl is about 2 weeks older than Iya and her pediatrician insists on waiting until 6 months to get on solids! Secretly Iâve been feeding her cereal with breastmilk every once in a while and Iâve been wanting to start on veggies and fruit… sheâs VERY interested and recognizes food! Thats why I was a tad surprised when i saw your IG stories feeding Iya… I wanted to do the same and I know my LO is ready.
Thanks for the recommendation for the ice cube tray, I was wondering which tray to go for!
I only used to follow you on Instagram before for fashion and makeup posts. Then we both got pregnant around the same time ( I think you were about a month ahead of me and then you has Iya a
earlier then anticipated. So, my baby is about 2 months younger than Iya. I can not begin to tell you how much am I enjoying reading your mommy blogs. Of course I do my own research but it’s so good to get the right direction. I take notes from your blogs and then do my own research. It’s so easy for me that way.
I already put in EVERYTHING in my Amazon cart already. Will decide in a month or so about what I want to get. Lol. Just a few question. I know every baby is different, but you mentioned that Iya started holding up her head around 4 month. If you don’t mind telling me, did she enjoy tummy time? Or were you doing anything else to substitute for tummy time if she did not? Are you using a pillow for her? If yes, then what kind? GIRL!! Her head shape is so perfect lol. My little one has a flat right side and I have done everything I could to fix it. She is not 4 months yet so, I think I STILL have time to fix it. Otherwise a helmet ,??ââď¸.
Thank you so much once again and keep these mommy posts coming. They are so useful.
P.s. I like how fresco looks but I have heard a lot of good things about Stoke highchair from my mommy friends. I haven’t reached that stage yet so, I don’t know but that’s what I have heard đ
Thank you so much love & congrats on your little one!!! Iya hates tummy time & I have to say im suuuper guilty for not doing it very often. I do let her hang out on her stomach on my chest a LOT though so I guess that counts! around the 4 month mark I noticed she always wanted to “stand” instead of sit on our lap so I bought this activity center: http://amzn.to/2iC0PPG
She’s getting soo strong from standing in it for a little bit every day, once she starts getting really rambunctious I want to get her a jumper to bounce around. Awww is her doctor worried about the flat part? Iya has a couple flat spots but theyre not too bad, her ped says its not a big deal and her hair will cover it. I honestly can’t notice them unless her hair is wet — she’s pretty bald I’m surprised I don’t notice it dry lol!
A few of my mommy friends love their Stokke trip trap too!
Thank you so much for your kind words <3
Love ur blog..my lil one is also 5 months masha allah.. i ordered philandteds poppy high chair for her..so many good reviews..so lets see.
Thank you for these favorites! It looks like we are both addicted to Amazon and purchase almost the same things! Thank God for Prime Lol. My little boy is 6’mos tomorrow and we started solids officially at 5mos. We use the Peg Perego high chair, it feels like the Mercedes benz of high chairs lol it glides, goes up and down and also back to a sleep position. Although I don’t know when you would lay them to sleep on a high chair. Maybe if they are in a food coma LOL! I also work from home so I make his food. We use the baby bullet also to mix things like avocado and bananas. For on the go, I use the earths best pouches. He LOVES the organic sweet potato and beet one. Iya might too since she loves sweet potatoes. He loves the BabieB Best spoons instead of the munchkin ones since they are softer and he can kind of bite on it. And definitely use the mesh feeder, love it! I put banana in there or soft pears or even frozen breast milk for when he’s teething. I was also told not to feed too close to bed time because it takes some time to digest and may mess with their sleep! Lord knows we need that! Bon Apetit little Iya!
You’re so cute, i swear you talk the same way i do LOL i was smiling reading your whole comment! You have me sold @ benz of high chairs haha. Thank you for all of your tips and recos, mama!! <3
Best high chair is the Stokke Tripp Trapp. It comes in a variety of colours and it is built to grow with your child right into adulthood. Itâs beautiful especially for mothers who still want their living space to look stylish and polished. Hope this helps.
P.S- congrats on your beautiful baby girl.
Check out the Peg Perego siesta high chair. I love it. It has wheels, reclines and can be adjusted to different heights!
My favorite part was when you made all the other moms out there feel comfortable with their choices. We need more of that. So, thank you Irene for recognizing and voicing your opinions on a problem that I can’t believe people still make issues of.
There is sooooo much mom shaming over every little thing, its not right! <3
Stokke Tripp Trapp is really good. Google Nuna Zaaz, they had some recalled due to safety issue
Ohhh good to know thank you!!
Irene,
Always love reading your posts before motherhood but now that I have my own 3 month baby girl I enjoy them more! Now as my baby girl isnât ready for solids just yet, I read a good indication for figuring out when is when they are starting to sleep through the night unswaddled and able to self soothe. My baby girl is addicted to being a burrito lol she takes all naps and night time sleep in her swaddle and itâs really hard trying to get her to transition out of it đ can you do a post on sleep habits for Iya and if you transitioned her out of swaddle and how you did so? Always looking for ideas!!
Thank you!
Awww! Honestly we swaddled Iya until past 4 months, she just sleeps so much better and longer with her arms down! We had velcro swaddles so we just started velcroing it down under her arm pits with her arms out — kind of like a potato sack lol! She didn’t mind it at all, now we use a proper sleep sack / wearable blanket at night and still do the velcro potato sacks for naps!
Hi lrene! First of all, I love everything you share with us! I have a little girl who is 14 months old now. We have the Nuna Zaaz chair. Itâs a good looking chair en we enjoy it. It is easy to clean (also important).
Aww, thank you for this post Irene. My little boy Zayn is now 4 1/2 months. We are thinking about waiting till he is 5-6 months as well to introduce food! Quick question, have you noticed any change in her feeding sessions? Is she consuming less BM now or the same??
Lots of love for you both!!
Hey Irene!
We use the same bumbo seat and we just love it!
We also use the ikea high chair, inexpensive, easy to clean and does the job.
My little girl is turning a year and hates sitting in anything longer than five minutes lol.
I also wanted the higher end high chairs, especially had my eye on the stokke. But with our baby the ikea one works just fine, itâs worth a try since itâs so cheap and if that doesnât work itâs great for grandparents house. They have really cute padded inserts on Etsy too!
Loved this! my baby is 6 months old and I had the same dilemma with the booster/feeding chair!
In Hong Kong space is quite limit so a big feeding chair is not so convinient! I have the bumboo chair as well, but I found that she enjoyed eating more in the Chicco Pocket Snack! Its so light, you can carry it and take it EVERYWHERE! Even put it under your stroller, small and light!
Thank you for the freezing tip, really comes in handy!
đ
I was hoping youâd do this post! And as far as high chair I think the ones you posted are the ones Iâm looking at Too. I love the bloom! Iâve felt the boon flair too and love the sleek look of it too and it also has a hydraulic system. I canât wait for Aydin to start on solids đ canât believe how big sheâs getting mA!
Youâd love the bloom high chair. Itâs from newborn all the way up to 3/4 years to use as a child seat. Whatâs more, itâs so stylish in our kitchen.
Hello, this was great thank you for sharing. Are you trying to ween because of the solids or are you introducing formula?
My goal is to stick to BM until it’s time for cow’s milk (at least a year), when I say ween I just mean introducing solids đ
Iâve used the fisher price space saver high chair for all three. For the first two kids, we were in an apartment and had minimal space and already had 6 dining chairs, so I didnât want to add anymore clutter to the space. And it was perfect! Never felt like anything was missing. When I had my third, I had way more space, but still decided on the space saver to use on my existing chair because I hate having âanother thingâ. The space saver does everything a regular high chair does, it just doesnât have the feet portion Bc it uses your chair. Hope this helps!
This is so helpful! My baby was born beginning of June and I’m just so confused about starting foods and whether or not to skip foods altogether for my 22 lb 5 month old lol I feel like people push the 6 month thing so much but maybe babies can be ready at 4 months or 5 or not need food at all until 7 months who knows. She doesn’t seem to want anything besides boob all day so gives me time to research haha. I never thought about something to warm up the baby food so I will definitely be purchasing the bottle warmer as I have just been nursing and haven’t put much thought into bottles
Wow!!! What a big girl! <3
Honestly at this age they get all of their nutrition from breast milk / formula, if your doctor isn't worried I wouldn't feel pressured!
What Irene said. My LO is 20lbs and almost 5 months and we are still EBF. I’ve talked it over with the pediatrician and we will start BLW around 6 months.
Oh and I have been hearing a lot of good things about the IKEA high chair in one of my mom groups. It is crazy affordable and very practical. Most of the mom a in the group raved about it because it is very user friendly and super easy to clean. Most of them purchased it after trying other popular ones. I plan to pick one up myself for the price I might as well try it out.
Hi Irene! Love the post. We use the Cosco high chair but we travel back and forth a lot so it folds nicely. Itâs alao soft so when she moves around she wonât bang her head haha. Also when my baby was born she had dark brown hair, it didnât all fall out but sheâs got dirty blonde hair now ? I assume itâll get darker when she gets older ?
4mom highchair! You can take the tray off one handed while holding her. Could not find another like that! Itâs all magnets. A little pricy but worth it. We are in love with it.
Oooo I’ll have to look into it, thank you!!
Hi dear,
My lill one is 5 and a half months. And her name is Aira. I like to read and follow u nd iya around insta nd ur blog as I can relate so much to you n little iya. May allah bless you and iya and keep both of you healthy and happy.Aameen.
Hi, thank you for sharing this. Can I ask you something else about Iya? I can see she has not that much hair is it because you cut them or they are growing slowly??? Iâm asking because my daughter has the same hair and I donât know if itâs just normal. Thank you
I haven’t cut her hair at all yet! All babies are different and I’m sure both of our babes’ hair will come in in no time haha! Her hair was black and thicker when she was born but now its thinned and turned brown (it’s normal for it to fall and come back in its permanent texture and color). I can’t wait til I can at least put a clip in it haha but it’s no biggie! She’s happy and healthy, all praise to God. â¤
Irene,
How important is it to shave their head according to religious values? Im asking because I really can’t wait to have a daughter but cutting my son’s hair off on the 7th day was by far the most painful thing for me đ I cried for days. My MIL is sooooo religious … I always wondered if it was ABSOLUTELY necessary… because if not, I would not like to cut my future daughter’s hair…
You’d have to do your own reading on but BUT I was always under the impression that it’s sunnah and not mandatory. I just looove baby hair I always said i wouldn’t shave my babies’ hair, but recently I heard in passing that it’s only required for boys and not girls?! I have to do some reading again. I’m sorry you were so upset about your sons hair!!! ? it really isn’t your MILs place AT ALL to decide what you do or don’t do with your children though. Boundaries!
I absolutely love this! Its crasy because My daughter was born 6/18/17 so as i watch her grow along with Iya its amazing the differences and the things I’m learning with you! This blog was so informative I truly thank you and appreciate how much work you put into it! The fact that you keep up with the blog and have such content inspires me that I can do more with my time! I do have a feeling my daughter wants to try food and after reading this wooh woman amazon is going to be my new best friend haha! But the highchair good luck finding it gets messy so hopefully one that wouldnt be hard to clean is so convenient! Anyway i couldn’t resist not to comment its like 4 am and well morning feeding time! Thank you again and mashallah such a beautiful family inshallah all the best!
Awwww!! Congrats on your babe!! Thank you so so much for your kind words, you are so sweet! Girl you’re a new mama, enjoy your time with your babe don’t feel pressured to do “more” unless you want to of course haha!
Thanks so much for sharing all this! Itâs so helpful đ my little one is just a few months younger than Iya so itâs nice having all these posts to read
Sooo happy to hear that, thank you so much for reading đ congrats on your little one, mama!! ???
